Some cheer camp highlights

Varsity Well, what would a cheer coach's summer be like without cheer camp? A lot more relaxing, that's for sure! After a 4 day camp, the swelling in my ankles and feet are just beginning to go down! I truly believe I was on my feet from 6 a.m. each day (or earlier) until after midnight! The only time we were able to sit down was for our 15 minutes meals and our 30 minute coaches' meeting each morning!
There were three of us coaches because we took our middle school squad, our JV squad, and our Varsity squad all to the same camp in San Antonio. That was a total of 44 kids (only one male in the group) plus the three of us coaches! Whew! Talk about a crowd! lol Everyone was so well-behaved, though, that it was actually quite an easy week getting everyone where they were supposed to be and on time! I was amazed that we didn't have major issues develop during the week!
Our varsity girls had learned a dance last year and made a few changes to it at our few practices this season, and they taught that dance to the ENTIRE camp! It was fabulous seeing that dance make its way from our group into the other squads! I have a photo across the gym of the whole camp dancing to those steps!
Honors brought home by our girls include Technical Awards for Jumps and Tumbling, the coveted Spirit Stick, a trophy for Champion Cheer, the much-desired Herkie Award, as well as having the entire Barbers Hill squads 100% nominated for All-American! That's quite an accomplishment! Oh, and our senior captain was invited to apply to the NCA staff-something every senior DREAMS of during camp. It's quite an honor to be singled out of a group of nearly 400 girls!!! And our captain was one of only three girls given this opportunity!
Now we're just about ready to jump into the new cheer season, including games, public appearances, and community service! It makes me proud to work with this particular group of young people, but I'm already tired just THINKING of the coming months! lol Guess I'd better stock up on vitamins!
Enjoy the photos!
